Bush Stance on Civil Unions
This is interesting. Bush says "I don't think we should deny people rights to a civil union, a legal arrangement, if that's what a state chooses to do so... I view the definition of marriage different from legal arrangements that enable people to have rights... States ought to be able to have the right to pass laws that enable people to be able to have rights like others."
So he's for a constitutional amendment that would bar same-sex marriages AND other unions like marriage (AKA Civil Unions), but he's also for allowing states to give civil unions to their citizens?
This is from the same man who has refused to enforce a provision that would allow same-sex partners of federal employees to buy into long-term care insurance at their own expense, and has worked to block congressional efforts to provide equal benefits and health insurance to same-sex partners of federal employees.
Is George pandering to gays? I think so. Will it work? I hope not.
