Food Bank Volunteering

One of the things I like most about Brian is how "manly" he is. The windshield wipers on Andrew Jackson are terrible and I bought replacements for them awhile ago. When Brian was in Cedar City, I could not figure out how to put them on my car. Sure enough, this morning I asked Brian to do it and he figured it out. Sometimes, I feel like a woman (don't get upset Jender Josh), but it's sure nice to know that I have a man who does those kinds of things.

Megan asked me to volunteer for the Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive. I reluctantly told her I would help for a few hours, but I really wasn't looking forward to it.

Just so you know how this works: people put bags of food by their mailbox, letter carriers pick them up and drop them off at local food banks, and volunteers organize the food for the food banks.

When Megan, Scott and I first got there, it was a mess. There was no order, no organization, and no direction on how to accomplish tasks. I decided that people weren't being efficient, so I started to organize the boxes that food was going into. Megan really helped to get others to understand the new system of organizing. When the next shipment of food came in, the organization was easy, quick, and efficient. We were able to rest before the next shipment came in. I was having a blast doing this and pretended we were helping natural disaster victims. I love making things and people more efficient.

Unfortunately, volunteers got tired and left. Some volunteers didn't like how I took charge and got lazy (one teenage girl commented rudely, "He's not the boss of me"). These two factors made everything fall apart. In the end, we were overwhelmed with food because people got lazy and stopped working.

All in all, the event went well and I had a blast helping.

Bourgeois Scott.

I kept teasing Scott throughout our time at the food bank because he was acting very bourgeois. Instead of organizing food, he stayed under the tent putting labels on the boxes. It was an important job that he excelled at, but it was funny to watch him in his $139 jeans drinking bottled water and watching the "working class."
