Globalization and Stupid Customers
Customers annoy me generally, but they drive me insane when they pull out the race card. One customer called me and said that tech support told him to call me (pre-sales department) to figure out what motherboard he has. Unfortunately, the tech support person who told the person this was incorrect. When I apologized and told him that I didn't know why they sent him to me, he exclaimed, "Because they are stupid! That's why! I want to talk to an American! I don't want to be transferred to India!"
First of all, I don't understand why customers don't understand what globalization is. I'm okay with outsourcing some economic resources to India or China (that's why I love Wal*Mart) and can understand why some people don't like it. But globalization is here to stay and people, especially in the computer industry, and if you don't want to try to understand someone's accent or have a racist attitude towards people, then you will be left behind.
I told the customer, "Sir, race has no bearing on how effective tech support agents are. I'm sorry you received bad information, but I will transfer you over there to make sure you are helped."
The funny thing is that the stupid customer wasn't being transferred to India; he was going to Costa Rica. Last time I checked, those accents are very different.
