Gay Deoxyribonucleic Acid... or not

Everyone has experienced it: you say something that was meant as a joke and someone takes it seriously (and I'm not talking about mean-spirited jokes).

Well, it happened to me today.

A coworker that we'll call "Dan" took issue with my assertion that I was genetically gay in a previous post. "Dan" is very much into science and genetics and told me that there is no way genetics are involved in making someone gay.

I told him he's wrong because we just don't know. There have been various studies showing it is genetics and studies showing that it isn't. They can't all be right or wrong, so the best speculation we can make is that we just don't know.

But "Dan" is wrong is making a clear cut statement disregarding genetics as a probable cause.

In addition, I recently read this interesting article that appeared in the Boston Globe that discusses this issue. The article leads to the idea that it may not be genetics or environment but what happens in the mother's womb.
