Don't Remind Me of ASOTV
I got a little upset with Brian tonight.
He's in Portland right now and he was raving about the paychecks that he will soon be getting. He told me that a sales associate averages about $1400 a paycheck. Since Brian will be a manager, he will make even more than that.
I guess it was jealousy that first upset me (since I make $9.87 an hour). But when I joked that I should get a job with him (ok, half-joking, half-serious), he didn't even entertain the thought. In fact, he snidely said, "You're too good to work in a kiosk" and reminded me that I didn't like sales. I interpreted his comment as I would suck at sales.
This got me thinking and I realized that I do work in sales. People call me when they are looking for Intel products and I inform them about our products and recommend which ones to buy. I also realized that I can do sales, but only of things that people really need. I couldn't sell something that someone could do without, but I think people need computers and cell phones. I also don't like cold selling; I want people to be interested in my product before I show them why they need it.
At work, we had a guy from Intel come to do a training. It turned out just to be a Q&A session with him, but he said a really great thing. He said in sales, you have to turn wants into needs. As I look back, I realize that I couldn't live without my computer, DVR, cell phone, or Ipod (in that order).
