Before Rent...

Russell came up tonight for the Thanksgiving holiday. Megan, Scott and I had plans to see Rent tonight, so I asked him if he wanted to come with us.

"Argh. I hate Rent," he said.

"What? You've never seen Rent!" I exclaimed.

"Yeah, but I had to listen to 'La Vie Boheme' every morning at 6am when you drove us to seminary."

Point taken. When I first saw Rent at the beginning of my junior year of high school, I immediately bought the soundtrack and listened to it for the rest of the school year; Russell was a casualty of my musical uniformity.

I convinced him to come with us tonight because it was a free ticket and he would be able to see what Rent was all about. On our way to Megan's (she graciously offered to make lasagna before the movie), Russell told me that it annoyed him that the people who like Rent are mostly white, suburban kids who don't "get" Rent. We discussed this and I agreed, but he agreed that historical fiction cannot be "gotten" by people who live after that time.

We ate dinner and then went to the Gateway.

After we got in line to see the 10pm showing of Rent, I thought we were at Pride due to the amount of gay men there. I kept embarrassing Scott by making loud comments like "So Scott, you are single?" I really wanted to find some "love" for Scott since there were lots of gay people present.

Russell and I also had fun coughing and saying things like "faggot", "c*&ksucker", and other derogatory terms for gays. He and I got some looks, but it was so funny!

Then we saw the movie.
