Brokeback Mountain: The Story
I just finished reading Annie Proulx's short story, Brokeback Mountain. I wanted to read it before the movie comes out and I'm glad I did.
The story is really beautiful and conveys the vastness and isolation of ranch life. I was touched by the love between the two men, their longing to be with one another but inability to live the lives they wanted because of the culture of the 60's. There is a connection between Jack and Ennis that the book describes that I hope the film shows. These are two touch ranchhands, but they love each other and only want to be together all the time.
I wasn't expecting the ending; in fact, I don't even know how I thought the story would end. But the ending is perfect, especially the description of Ennis visiting Jack's childhood home.
Also, it was cool to read the book listening to the soundtrack to the movie. I think I know where some songs will go in the movie and I'm looking forward to seeing it.
