Relationship Clarity

My uncle Charles needed help with his printer, so Brian and I went over to help him and get a free dinner made by my Aunt Louise.

They are one of my favorite families to hang out with because not only are they funny and lively, they don't care about Brian and I being together in a romantic fashion. He and I can talk about things like Valentine's day or anniversaries without anyone getting squimish.

I wonder if it's because my Aunt Louise is white and my Uncle Charles is black. At first, their relationship wasn't looked upon with much approval. My Dad says that it was hard for the family to go to their wedding. Today, no one has any problems with it because they've learned to love Charles and times have changed (they married in the earlier 80's).

While I don't feel like our relationship is not approved, I feel like it's not fully accepted or understood--my family still sees us as best friends and not two people who are in love with each other. That's why I like hanging out with the Lee family--they see Brian and I as we truly are.

Side Note: My favorite part of the night was when Brian and I were explaining Scientology to them. They kept laughing and laughing because they could not believe that people actually believe in this stuff! It was cool though when Aunt Louise said, "Well, most religions are weird. I mean, look at ours (Mormonism)! A 14-year-old boy prays in the woods and sees God and Jesus? Please!"
