The Color of Money

I had to go to the bank this morning to withdrawal $2200 to pay for my trip to Mexico. I told the teller that I needed a check for the said amount. She typed something on her computer and then said, "That will be $8."

"Um, I've gotten it free before."

"I can't give you them for free."

I became annoyed. "I was at a Wells Fargo a few months ago and got a check for $1700. It was free. I know you can give it to me for free."

"I'm sorry sir," she responded. "I can't give you one for free."

"How can we do this then? I'm not going to pay for a check that I've gotten for free before."

"I can give you money orders for less than $1000."

"That's fine. I need you to give me four money orders." ($140 was for my parents, the other was for tuition).

I left the bank a little ticked. I got the free check at a Wells Fargo on the east side and had to pay for a check on the west side. Is it because the west side bank is frequented by minorities and the bank can make money off of them?
